The video A Vision of Students Today was assigned for a class that i am currently taking that is in fact a technology application for professionals class. The video displayed facts from the students at Kansas State that relate to my life as well as many college. Myself and others use technology every day, more than once a day, it almost consumes our entire lives. Technology is taking over some may say that it is a bad thing others may say that it alleviates some of the stress and allows us to get things finished with speed. Students mind sets on learning are forever changing and adapting to the technology that is used.
When i was in the fourth grade i was lucky to have a classroom that was the "computer classroom". The classroom had nothing but computers and you were to take notes, turn in your homework, and take test on the computer. At this age i was learning everything that I needed to know in order to strive in a technology world. This computer class room has left me with almost too much knowledge of the computer. One of the students showed in the video stated that she will read 8 books this year, 2300 web pages, and 1281 Facebook profiles. FACEBOOK!! Facebook would be a main reason why so many students have fallen into technologies death trap. Facebook being one of the largest social networking site is a HUGE distraction when it comes to getting homework finished, studying for tests, or even taking notes in class. I admit i have fallen into the Facebook trap i will find myself on Facebook all hours of the night when I should be studying or doing something productive and of some significance to my life.

Not only are there distractions in the classroom there is a problem with students even showing up to class. A sign held by a student stated "my neighbor pays for this class but never comes." There are many students as well as their parents spending a great deal of money on education. Students spend hundreds of dollars on books and never open them, or if they do open them it is to read one or two pages and shove it back onto their desks. More and more teachers are finding the use of technology positively and either entirely using PowerPoint and systems such as Blackboard. While others have decided to find the online editions of books, making it cheaper for the students as well as saving a few trees. But my question is this, when did students find it okay to waste all of this money? What is the point in spending dollar after dollar if you are not going to put for the effort in the class room, rather it is reading the required text or paying attention in class instead of being on Facebook, or constantly checking your email. Technology i believe is something that is very positive but is bogging down our class room and coming in the way of our youths expanding and developing minds.
This video overall made opened my eyes and want to apologize to my parents (who pay for my education). Say sorry to my mother and father for spending thousands of dollars of their money, which they worked so hard and so long to be able to give to myself and my siblings. I have to been one of these students who would rather Facebook or text during class than pay close attention to my professor. Technology is something that I must have in my everyday life, but that does not mean I have to let it consume my every thought.
I agree with you--education is so expensive, and people are always cutting class. I did the math: if you take 15 hours a semester, every single class day you miss, you waste $83.00.
ReplyDelete$83.00!!! I refuse to spend tons of money on a great education but never go to class. I will be getting the most out of my tuition!
I agree with both of you! So many of my friends are like I just didn't go to class today because I didn't feel like it! Its terrible! Not only are the wasting there tuition but they are falling behind! I cannot believe that is 83.00!! Now I will not miss class at all!! I will also be getting the most out of my tuition!!
ReplyDeleteJacquelyn, I think it is neat that you were in a classroom where you had the opportunity to use the computers. It amazes me how good some people are at using and navigating technology, and then there are others who do not know how to do anything.
ReplyDeleteI like how you said "students mind sets on learning are forever changing and adapting to the technology that is used. I think it is so true. Once something new in technology comes out, people are learning how to use that and adapting what they know. People are using their computers, phones, ipads, and many other types of technology to learn today.
